Rabi vegetables: Cabbage

About Cabbage: Cabbage is leafy green or purple plant grown as annual vegetable crop. These are rich source of vitamin A and C also it contains minerals like phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sodium and iron. Cabbage can be eaten as raw as well as in cook form. In India, cabbage is grown mainly in winter in the plains region.

For growing cabbage, a pH range of 6.0-6.5 is recommended. Plants that grow in saline soils are more susceptible to illness. Temperatures between 15 and 21 degrees Celsius are thought to be ideal for crop development and head formation.

Growing Season and varieties:  Some of the varieties include Golden Acre, Pusa Drumhead, Pride of India, Pusa Mukta, Pusa Synthetic, Early Drumhead, Late Large Drum Head, and K-1. From July to November, early cabbage is sown. It takes about 300-500g of seeds to develop a nursery large enough to sow one hectare. Seeds are treated with Trichoderma viride (4 g/ kg of seed) or Thiram (3 g/ kg of seed) before to sowing.

Fertilizer Management: About 4 weeks before transplanting, 15-20 tonnes of well-decomposed FYM should be introduced into the soil for a decent yield. In general, 80-120 kg N, 60-100 kg P2O5, and 60-120 kg K2O are recommended for maximum yield. At the time of transplantation, half of the N dose and the entire amount of P and K are given. Six weeks after transplanting or while earthing up, the remaining N is administered.

Procedure and chemicals required: Cabbage is ready to harvest 90-120 days after sowing, depending on the variety. Cabbage heads should be harvested as soon as they are solid and ripe. Early types yield 25-30 t/ha on average, while late varieties give 40-60 t/ha.

Pest control:

Cutworm: Apply Methyl Parathion or Malathion (5 percent dust) to the soil before sowing as a preventative step.

If a leaf-eating caterpillar infestation is discovered in the field, spray Dichlorvos@200ml/150Ltr water or Flubendiamide 48 percent [email protected]/3Ltr water to suppress the caterpillars. Spray Imidacloprid 17.8SL @ 60ml/acre with 150 Ltr water if sucking pests such as Aphid and Jassid are present. Spray Metalaxyl 8% + Mancozeb 64 percent WP@ 250gm/150Ltr of water with a sticker to control leaf spot or blight.
