Advisory for Kharif cultivation in Odisha

General Advisory

Due to the lack of rain in the district, summer ploughing is recommended. Irrigation with sprinklers reduces the heat effect. Irrigate in two rows at a time. To avoid high temperatures, vegetable transplanting should be done in the afternoon. Farmers can go ginger and turmeric harvesting. If you’ve harvested your ginger, stack it and plant it wherever you can. Spray 1 g Streptocycline + 30 g copper oxychloride in 10 litres of water in the root zone of tomato and brinjal plants to prevent wilting. Plant protection measures can be implemented when the weather is clear and dry; wet days should be avoided. Because of the Corona virus, keep at least one and a half metres between two workers, use masks, and wash hands often.

Summer Paddy

In the main field, the crop is in the blossoming to harvest stage. During the PI and flowering stages, keep standing water to a maximum of 5cm. Algal bloom is a big problem nowadays following rice transplanting. Spray Copper oxychloride@3g/litre of water or apply 10kg CuSO4/ha in the soil to suppress it. Increased warmth may encourage stem borer egg hatching in the main field of rice. Place 4 Pheromon Traps per acre to attract butterflies, collect the adults, then burn or bury them under soil to eradicate them. To keep an eye on the adult population, set up pheromone traps. If the dead heart rate exceeds the ETL (more than 5%), apply Rynaxapyr 0.4G @4kg/acre to the soil, or alternate Fipronil @2ml/l with Indoxacarb @ 1.5ml/litre at 15-day intervals.

There is a risk of gundhi bug and ear cutting caterpillar infestation in certain crops because they are in the milking stage. Spray Ethofenoprox 10 percent EC @ 1 ml/litre of water or Lamda Cyhalothrin 5 percent EC @ 0.5 ml/litre of water to control Gundhi bugs. Spray Quinolphos 25 percent EC @ 2 ml/litre of water to control ear cutting caterpillars. Rice that was transplanted early has reached maturity. When 80-85 percent of the grains in the panicles have developed, harvest the rice crop. Before harvesting, keep an eye out for rain and make sure the harvested paddy is stored safely.

Kharif Paddy

With the arrival of pre-monsoon showers, land preparation for a dry nursery can begin. For medium to shallow lowland transplanted rice, arrange good quality seed of varieties like Hasanta, CR 1009 sub-1, CR Dhan 307 (Maudamani), CR Dhan 303, CR Dhan 304, MTU 1001, MTU 1075, CR Dhan 310, DRR 44, Improved Lalat, CR Dhan 301 (Hue), CR Dhan 800, CR Dhan 404, Upahar, Swarna, Pooja, Swarna Sub 1 and BPT 5204 may be arranged from reliable source like Research institute, Universities, KVK, Block Office and other reputed farms.

Farmers in coastal saline regions should obtain salt-tolerant cultivars such as CR Dhan 405 (Luna Sankhi), CR Dhan 403 (Luna Suvarna) and Lunishree from a trusted supplier. Farmers who want to cultivate hybrids in irrigated medium and shallow lowland should get good quality seeds from reputable seed firms, farms, or agencies of hybrids like Ajay, Rajlaxmi, CR Dhan 701, KRH-2, and PHB 71.
